Anyway, we're also going to be talking about the updated, but still familiar, design in the Mac app.Omnifocus 3 for Mac helps you manage your tasks the way you want. I'm sure that sounded like a pretend celebration. Mac android emulator pasteWe know that it will be when Mojave launches, but we, of course, don't know when that will be. We know that it's going to be in September. Or game half day or however that works.Ken: Right now the actual ship day itself is going to be a surprise. And, of course we're all looking forward to a surprise game day at some point in the future. When you're actually hearing this, we are very excited and of course nervous in the office, because ship days are always nervous-making days too, but very exciting and fun days. So, we need to be ready to ship, sort of, any time in the month, and that's where we are.Brent: And if you're listening, you know all the answers to the questions that we actually have at the moment. Usually lately it's been a week and a half, so that's what we're guessing.Dave: But a false sense of security could be a killer.Ken: Yeah. Sometimes a week and a half, it varies. "Better submit your apps." Like that?Ken: Yeah, they usually give us a week’s notice for iOS and a little more than that, maybe two weeks, for Mac. I don't know if we'll ship the exact same day as Mojave, but we're trying to time it pretty closely.Joel: Doesn't Apple usually tell us like a day or two. We assume that Apple is going to tell us at least a few weeks in advance, like they have every other year.Dave: Boy, I sure hope they do. They were moving — it was sort of a reaction to the skeuomorphic designs of iOS 6 and earlier. So they were going for very thin text, much more spartan UI in general. That when we designed OmniFocus 2, we were designing that, echoing the design changes that Apple was making in iOS 7. What happened, Ken?Ken: Well, I talked actually about this a little bit in the road map at the beginning of the year. Well, we've gone and all made it look different and everything. I thought it was a pretty nice looking app. So, we kinda beefed up the icons a little bit and focused a little bit more on heavier text and little bit bolder design, heavier design. And we did follow suit earlier in the year, in OmniFocus 3 for iOS. This is our chance I guess to just sort of follow suit.Dave: That's right. And Apple has backed away from that in the years since then. It just made it hard for them to see. But along the way, we lost some of the affordances that you get around seeing the differences between icons, around the readability of text when it gets too thin for some people that. I find that these rounder shapes are more friendly, less intimidating, which I think is important for these. So, what used to be a rectangle is now a roundrect, that sort of thing. Solid instead of line art, and the elimination of sharp corners wherever possible. That's my pet description for the treatment of the icons and the iconography in both the iOS and the macOS app now. But we're definitely going a little bolder in OmniFocus 3 for Mac.Brent: I heard the word “blobular” used, was that you, Joel?Joel: Yeah. Not a mandate but it was, "Why don't you start over from scratch?" So, my initial designs, months and months ago, were really quite a long ways away from OmniFocus 2. Before you really started designing the individual sections, did you kind of start over from scratch or. Maybe back up one step before that. So let's just go through different sections of the app and talk about the thinking. And I was trying to think of a good way to describe it and… “globular” and “blobby” and… “blobular.”Brent: Yeah. Those are the sorts of things you run into when you start prototyping the more radical designs.Brent: So, the toolbar, let's start there. But, radical, I like that quite a bit.Dave: So, just like pedestrian safety standards dictate the way you can shape a bumper on a car, macOS dictates the way you can have a toolbar or not have a toolbar on a window, and what happens when a toolbar-less window goes full screen and expects to have a toolbar that drops down from the top of the window. You know, months ago Grayson described my initial designs as being “opinionated,” which they were. And so, when these concept cars actually make it into production, you find that they're a little less radical than they looked on stage.Joel: Sure. And then the sidebar would extend all the way to the top of the window view, instead of stopping at where the normal toolbar would be. I initially was thinking about, what's in the toolbar that everybody pretty much always needs? And just had mocked up some dedicated, borderless buttons in the upper right hand corner. Which is just a window with the stop light buttons up in the upper left corner for closing it or maximizing it or minimizing it. I was looking at say, an app like Contacts. Which we can use for stuff, which is cool. So, the toolbar is very similar to Safari's where the close, minimize, and zoom buttons are in line with the toolbar buttons.Joel: And, it's shorter, you don't get any descriptive text underneath the buttons but there's a setting to always show the tool tips when you're mousing over, and not even delay, so that's what we ultimately decided to go with.Brent: And so, with a less tall toolbar, we get little extra space back in that main window.Brent. If you take a window such as that, and you make it full screen, you're going to get a toolbar no matter what.Joel: So, in that case a compromise, I suppose, is that we took away the title bar from the toolbar. Charles proxy android emulator macIt's still customizable like any other toolbar right?Brent: I noticed that the colors have been updated throughout in this new release. We took a hard look at what we were putting in the toolbar, compared it to iOS where we have much more limited space and said, “Well, if we're getting away with this on iOS, let's give it a shot, at least as the default, on Mac.”Brent: Right. The default set of toolbar buttons in shipping 3.0 is fewer than in version 2?Dave: I think it's significantly fewer. But yeah, in line with doing something a little more bright and friendly, we decided to brighten up the colors of the text in more places. We would change the sidebar color a little bit based on which Perspective you were in, and so on, to help people know where they were as they were navigating through the app. We used that somewhat in OmniFocus 2, to help people. And that's a preference setting because some people find that too distracting. So, for example, when a task becomes due, its text turns red.
